Weekend of September 25th   8 comments

This morning at 3:09am, as we all slept, the Autumnal Equinox (when night and day are nearly of the same length and Sun crosses the celestial equator moving Southward) quietly took place. You will notice on Sunday the sunrise and sunset are both at 6:50, exactly 12 hours apart. Nights will now be longer than days until March 20th, 2011. Depressing notion? Yes, and I regret that I have to make mention of it in the first place. But as we all know; with every Autumnal Equinox comes…THE HARVEST MOON!!!

The harvest moon is the moon at or about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox. All full moons rise around the time of sunset, thus there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise around the time following these full moons. In times past this feature of these autumn moons was said to help farmers working to bring in their crops. They could continue being productive by moonlight even after the sun had set. Hence the name Harvest Moon.

Color: Often, the Harvest Moon seems to be bigger or brighter or more colorful than other full moons. The warm color of the moon shortly after it rises is caused by light from the moon passing through a greater amount of atmospheric particles than when the moon is overhead. The atmosphere scatters the bluish component of moonlight (which is really reflected white light from the sun), but allows the reddish component of the light to travel a straighter path to one’s eyes.

Size: The apparent larger size is because the brain perceives a low-hanging moon to be larger than one that’s high in the sky. This is known as a moon illusion and it can be seen with any full moon. It can also be seen with constellations; in other words, a constellation viewed low in the sky will appear bigger than when it is high in the sky.

P.S. it may be our last ride ’cause the boat is scheduled to come out Sunday morning 😦

Just when we thought the tropical activity in the Atlantic has subsided, a freak weather pattern blows in from the west (in on a Delta flight I believe?) Hurricane Dave making an appearance, very appropriately during hurricane season. What type of damage will lay in its path?

Packy is having a “Free Sophie” party all weekend and invites all ESK followers to attend as well (Sophie pic below):

Alert Alert,
Apparently the Avalon Police department has absconded with the family hound… So in response Ive decided that we should have a party to either memorialize her(a la free mumia) or to raise money to release the hound.
The family loughran has gone to visit several times over the last few weeks and apparently Sophie is OK but she wants to make sure that the shore house is being well used. Let’s make her a little more at ease by storming the place for a weekend full of skinny dipping, various water bowl themed beverages and doggy freedom rallies. By the way, the AKC and Eukenuba will be sponsoring the event.
The details are as follows:
Weekend of September 24-26th
Arrive Friday
Leave Sunday
Dagit/Loughran House:
56 E 16th St

Rumor is Dark and Stormy’s and Mexican Train will be included.

  1. Afternoon class cancelled today, driving to the seven mile island now. Note: Cousin Ali friend #1 and #2 won’t be down until late so those sppts are available on the boat! Bring on the slightly cooler summer months.

  2. I’m confused. what did sophie do to get taken away by the cops??? I have a 30th birthday here so I will sadly not be in avalon this weekend. BUT i willl be there the following weekend with about 12 of my friends from PALAU!

  3. Yes for nate and sage

  5. Sadly we will not be in for a final summer weekend 😦 We have a wedding to attend and painting to do-anyone interested in painting will earn free beer! Love the sunglasses picture this week! Enjoy the moon show and don’t forget to look for Jupiter this weekend!

  6. The Boat Float sounds like a phenomenal idea for an annual event. But, alas, I won’t be able to make it for the inaugural voyage – instead I’m driving down to VA to celebrate the first birthday of a child that may have been conceived on my couch.

  7. Johnny P making an appearance? Its 6am and the Hurricane has been down for a day now. Lets get this party started.

And for any of you who wont be making it down,

    let’s quote Jimmy Buffet..

The weather is here, wish you were beautiful.

It was incredible yesterday- mid august without the humidity. Gonna get that out of mothernature today too.

  8. Here ya go Surftime
